Navigating In the Storm: Advocacy and Allyship in Public Education - Amy Hatzel
For many families, their first experience with an individual who has hearing loss comes swaddled in a tiny blanket. The journey ahead, filled with uncertainties, elicits much medical, yet limited social, emotional, or functional, support. Educators are faced with the challenge of providing information and resources while maintaining boundaries as school employees. Together, we will define “advocate” and “ally,” discuss how these roles manifest in our work, and identify potential risks/pitfalls to all involved.
Cultivating a Classroom Community through Positive Self Advocacy - Katie Telek and Leslie Thompson
This presentation will focus on self-advocacy skills for oral students within a mainstream setting. This includes instructional strategies to help students identify their technology (hearing aid, cochlear implant, and bone conduction hearing aid), understanding and explaining their hearing, and student’s ability to share their knowledge with others.

In this workshop, you will be able to understand De'VIA art movement and how to use it to reduce tensions among deaf students with broken families, ethnic, racial, and language obstacle in the classroom. Six Stages of Deafhood Pedagogies strategies will be discussed and how to boost deaf students'; identity, language, and culture.

The focus of this presentation will be to take a piece of literature and how to develop STEM related, hands on activities that correlate to the theme of the literary piece.
